Making Your Nursing Drug Cards

By Deanne Shepard

Most of the nursing students are using a drug card to know and learn how most of the drugs are administered and used. They also learn dosage and common side effects of the drugs used. Although most of the drug cards are purchased, almost all nursing students are required to create their own cards. This is a helpful way for them to understand better and remember a certain detail and statistics.

Once you create a medical card, you always have to speak with your teacher and gather some information appropriate for your project. In making nursing drug cards, basic data must be applied. However, there are teachers who would require their students to gather additional data that others do not. Once your teacher explains some important requirements, you also have to make a list of the details you should include.

You also need to gather some materials and supplies that are important to make your cards. You have to prepare a stack of note pads. Your instructor will give you instruction on the appropriate size and quantity that you will use for the nursing cards. Once you have some plans, you need to jot them down using a pencil. This way, you can simply erase or change some details if necessary.

You can also use your markers or even the highlighters. You can apply varieties of colors so you can make a color coded card. Every information will be colored with the colors you desire. It could be color pink, blue or orange. You may also use the internet and gather textbooks when you make a medical card.

Write down all the trade and generic names of the each medicine in front of the note card. This may include their proper pronunciations. However, it is not necessary to color this data. You can use any color you want or a plain black marker will do. You may flip the card and write significant statistics on the back portion.

You may write again the codes at the top portion of the cards. Write all the data or statistics in a neat, tidy and clean manner. You can also refer a certain requirements coming from your teacher. The most common details are the drug classifications, dosage, common side effects, therapeutic effects, drug actions and the nursing implications.

In this case, you can mark each side with the colors you want. You can also use a certain color that marks every information. For example, you will be using a blue color for the word nursing. It depends on you. If you do have any highlighter, you can still use the markers for the outline boxes for every section.

You continue writing the required medicines. Your instructor will also give you the lists needed. If not, then you should assess the patients and lean the type of drugs provided to them After that, you may create a card with the drugs you have been given to them. You may also check the side effects after taking the drugs.

You should study all the details you have gathered. Much better if you will memorize the words. You can also check yourself if you are already knowledgeable about the data you have gathered. This way, you can measure your knowledge about your project.
