Many people may or may not know this but North America is ranked third to be the vastest continent following Asia and Africa. It is found at the Northern Hemisphere and is likewise bordered by the different and large oceans of the world. As one of the vastest continents on Earth, it is said to measure more than 16 percent of its total land area.

When the said place is being talked about, many are inclined to think of USA. However, what comes as a surprise to many people is that there are actually twenty three countries comprising it including territories and possessions such as Mexico, Canada, and Greenland. It is also known to be the home to the North American commanderie.

The land is also actually very old and is estimated to have existed to be 1 to 1.5 billion years old. However, it was not populated until around 15,000 years ago by indigenous people called the Paleo Indians who were migrants from Eurasia. There is still no evidence as to how they have come to settle there but many historians believe they did this by crossing a land bridge which supposedly existed at the Bering Strait.

There also are several intriguing facts around the native societies that developed in there before European colonization took place. Many studies prove that areas were culturally divided and people lived differently from each other depending on their geographic location and climate. The Europeans colonized it during the Age of Discovery. But some time later, probably around the 18th and 19th century, people from the territories began their fight for independence.

There were devastating effects on the population of natives present around the area. One of these is the bringing about of European disease to the continent which killed a lot of natives that were residing there. Likewise, there were also wars which led to the destruction of not only societies but also linguistic groups, cultural knowledge, and folklore.

Most, if not every single real biome, could likewise be found in the geographic zone of a similar landmass. Biomes are creature life and plant groups which spread all through a specific zone with genuinely uniform atmosphere. Beside the deserts, tropical rainforests, tundras, coral reefs, and prairies found here, elements like the Mississippi River and Niagara falls likewise exist.

When the place is being talked about, its wildlife is also brought into the conversation especially because it is known to be diverse and exciting. It is said that thousands of mammal species and plants could be discovered in the continent. This is attributed to the fact there are several biomes in the zone which is most probably why animals and plants feel at home there.

Moreover, the continent has also been a host of the Olympics for twelve times. The first one was in 1904 while the last summer games were in 1968 in St. Louies Missouri and Mexico City, respectively. This is the highest number of times a country or continent has hosted one in the whole world.
